Samsung Electronics Co. owes Apple Inc. $1 billion for improperly copying its iconic designs for the iPhone, iPad, and other consumer electronic devices, a California federal jury ruled Friday.

The jury shot down Samsung’s claims that Apple infringed Samsung’s own patents, and found that Samsung’s infringement of Apple’s patents was willful. The decision comes on the heels of news earlier in the day that a South Korean court found both Apple and Samsung had infringed each other’s patented technology, and ordered each to stop selling certain products in South Korea.
