IPNews® – The USPTO has struck down a Trademark Application for the band name “The Slants,” citing it as offensive to the Asian American community.
Band members of the Pacific Northwest’s “The Slants” have filed an appeal with the TTAB to seek an overturning of the refusal to trademark the band name, which was denied registration due to its connotation as a racial slur. The band, which is comprised completely of members of Asian heritage, argue that the terms use as an insult is outdated and that today, the term is not inherently offensive.
